When The Light Goes Out

Just a few days ago, I was gathering some images for a guest blog post I wrote. And what struck me as I put the images together from 2017-2020 was the difference in the light in my eyes.

In the 2017 picture, two years “post” rock bottom but 5 years into my mental health crisis/journey, my eyes are lifeless. To be honest, the picture looks a lot like a mug shot.

What I know, is that by 2017, I was starting to show signs of life again, but they were not guaranteed, and each day was a little bit of a crapshoot. The toll the journey had taken on my body and mind is starkly evident in the picture.

Today, the light is back, burning brighter perhaps than it has burned in a long time.

Well-Being Tip of The Month:

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by your “to do” list? No? I do! Often! My default is to wonder what is “wrong” with me that I feel like I do not have the capacity to do everything I have put on my plate. But here is the
thing. There is nothing wrong with me. It is more likely that either or both of these things are actually true:

(1) I have put too much on my plate; and/or

(2) My body needs me to attend to it first, before asking myself to perform at a high level.

The next time you feel overwhelmed by your “to do” list, consider how looking through the lens of #1 and #2 might influence what you are asking of yourself, how you talk to yourself about it, and how you are investing in your own well-being in support of your goals and objectives.

Try Softer
By Aundi Kolber’s

I have highlighted this book before, but it is breaking me open right now, in a good way. MOST of us have had traumatic experiences in our lives. And if we did not have a safe adult to help us learn to regulate and heal, then we are likely still living with the effects. Aundi Kolber’s Try Softer explores in a gentle and accessible way how little “t” and big “T” trauma shape our brain, and what we can do to support our ability to heal. I highly recommend this one!
